How AI shopping reaches a Shopify store
Every path an AI takes from a shopper's question to a merchant's order, across today's main AI channels.

Shoppers are starting to skip the search results. They ask an AI assistant for a product, and the assistant compares options, reads the fine print and shortlists a few stores. More and more often, it completes the purchase too.
That changes the route from a question to an order. This guide maps every main path as of October 2026: where shoppers ask, how each AI sees your products, where checkout happens and where the order ends up.

The short version
- Most AI channels read your products from Shopify Catalog, which eligible Shopify stores join by default.
- Google, Copilot, Meta's Muse and the Shop app can complete checkout inside the chat. ChatGPT, Perplexity and browser agents mostly send the shopper to your store.
- You stay the merchant of record. Orders land in your Shopify admin, tagged by AI channel.
- In-chat checkout is mostly US-first, and availability changes often.

Channel by channel
Here's what each path means in practice.
ChatGPT
Eligible Shopify stores are synced into Shopify Catalog automatically, and that's where ChatGPT finds products. When a shopper picks one, they're sent to the store and pay on its own checkout with Shop Pay, cards, PayPal or wallets.
Google AI Mode & Gemini
Google reads Shopify Catalog through the Universal Commerce Protocol. Checkout is embedded inside Google with no redirect, and the shopper confirms the order with Google Pay. It's in early access in the US, with Canada rolling out.
Microsoft Copilot
Shopify stores are auto-enrolled and managed in Agentic Storefronts. Copilot Checkout shows the merchant's own Shopify checkout inside the chat. Merchants on BigCommerce, Wix, Shopware and other platforms can apply to join through PayPal Store Sync or Stripe, using the Agentic Commerce Protocol. PayPal or Stripe then handles fraud, disputes and buyer protection.
Meta AI & Muse
Muse, Meta's personal agent, searches Shopify Catalog when a shopper asks. The shopper approves an order card and pays with Shop Pay, using their saved card, address and email. It's launching in the US first.
Perplexity
Shoppers use Perplexity to discover and compare products, read from Shopify Catalog or PayPal Store Sync. Most purchases are sent to the store's checkout. PayPal merchants can also sell inside the chat.
Shop app
Shopify's own shopping app uses Shopify Catalog for search, feeds and buy-again. Shop Pay details are already saved, so a purchase takes a tap or two.
Browser agents
Agents working in the shopper's browser read the live store page as structured data (WebMCP) and complete the store's own checkout. The shopper still clears 3D Secure. Shop Pay support has been live since late September 2026.
A store's own assistant
A branded agent on the store's site can search the live catalog through Shopify's UCP endpoints, build the cart and hand the shopper to the usual checkout.
What this means for your store
Every path starts the same way: an AI reading your store's data. These six things decide whether it recommends you or someone else.
- 01 Complete product data. Specific titles and filled-in attributes like material, size and ingredients, so an agent can match you to what the shopper asked for.
- 02 Clear policies. Returns, shipping and warranty written in plain text an agent can quote. If it has to guess, it hedges or picks someone else.
- 03 Accurate stock and pricing. Your feed and your store must match. One oversold item or wrong price costs you the agent's trust.
- 04 A clean path to checkout. Forced logins, pop-ups and bot walls stop agents before they reach payment.
- 05 Trust signals. Verified reviews and the same price everywhere you sell.
- 06 Visible AI traffic. Most analytics file AI visits under "direct". A dedicated AI channel shows what's actually working.
Frequently asked questions
What is agentic commerce?
It's shopping where an AI assistant does the legwork: searching, comparing and, increasingly, checking out for the shopper. Instead of opening ten tabs, the shopper asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Muse, and the assistant builds the shortlist.
Does my Shopify store already show up in ChatGPT?
Possibly. Eligible Shopify stores are included in Shopify Catalog by default. Being recommended is a different question, and it depends on your product data, policies and trust signals.
Which AI channels let shoppers buy without leaving the chat?
As of October 2026: Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta's Muse and the Shop app. ChatGPT, Perplexity, browser agents and most store assistants send the shopper to the store's own checkout. Most in-chat checkout is US-first.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
No. Agentic Storefronts works on standard Shopify plans. Shopify Plus adds more control over checkout and B2B, which helps larger brands.
Who owns the order when an AI makes the sale?
The merchant does. The store stays the merchant of record and ships the order. On Shopify, AI orders land in the Shopify admin, tagged by AI channel.
